What's Happening in Palm Beach County: September 11 through 24

By Kristi Ramella | South Florida Downsizing Specialist

Downtown Delray Beach at golden hour with string lights glowing over Mediterranean storefronts, palm trees, and sidewalk cafes along Atlantic Avenue

There is a particular kind of magic in mid-September in Palm Beach County. The summer crowds have genuinely thinned, the sunsets come earlier and arrive with that honeyed golden light, and the restaurants feel like they belong to the neighbors again. The event calendar is quietly spectacular: a country superstar at the amphitheater, a moonlit evening in a glowing Japanese garden, a beachside battle between two Florida football rivals, and one of the region's biggest dining celebrations still in full swing. Whether you live here year-round or you are an empty nester quietly wondering what a move to South Florida could feel like, these next two weeks are a wonderful window into this community. Here is exactly what is happening in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and across Palm Beach County from September 11 through September 24.

What's happening this weekend, September 11 through 13?

This weekend gives you the best of everything: a final curtain call for a beloved Broadway musical, one of the biggest country shows of the year, the serene rituals of a Japanese garden, and the easy rhythm of Sunday farmers markets.

Friday, September 11

"42nd Street" - Delray Beach Playhouse
7:30 PM at 950 NW 9th St, Delray Beach. Tickets start at $45 through the Playhouse. This classic Broadway musical about a chorus girl who gets her big break is in its final weekend, and Friday night is one of the last chances to catch it. The Delray Beach Playhouse, Florida's oldest continuously operating community theater, does big, joyful productions exceptionally well.

Saturday, September 12

Luke Bryan - Word On The Street Tour, iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre
7:00 PM at 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach. Tickets through Live Nation and Ticketmaster. One of the biggest concerts of the month lands on Saturday: country superstar Luke Bryan brings his Word On The Street Tour to iTHINK with Lauren Watkins, Lanie Gardner, and Randall King on the bill. The grassy hillside seating makes it a relaxed, open-air way to spend a perfect September evening.

Koto Workshop - Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens, Delray Beach
10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at 4000 Morikami Park Rd, Delray Beach. $30 members, $40 non-members, registration required. Learn to play the koto, the traditional Japanese stringed instrument, in this hands-on introductory workshop. Instruments are provided, and the intimate setting is a rare chance to connect with one of Japan's most elegant musical traditions.

Family Fun Day: Dragonfly Clip - Morikami Museum
Museum hours 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at 4000 Morikami Park Rd, Delray Beach. Free with museum admission ($10 to $15). A family-friendly craft activity where children and adults can make their own dragonfly-themed creation, inspired by the Japanese word tombo for dragonfly, a symbol of strength and happiness. It is a lovely activity to share with visiting grandchildren.

Umoja McNeish: Violins Reimagined - Arts Garage, Delray Beach
8:00 PM at 94 NE 2nd Ave, Delray Beach. Tickets through Arts Garage. Cellist and violinist Umoja McNeish performs a fresh, contemporary program that reimagines the classical instruments. The intimate 99-seat room at Arts Garage is perfect for this kind of close-up musical experience.

"42nd Street" - Delray Beach Playhouse
2:00 PM and 7:30 PM at 950 NW 9th St. Tickets start at $45. Two more performances of the summer musical classic on its final weekend.

Sunday, September 13

Japanese Tea Ceremony - Morikami Tea House
10:15 AM at 4000 Morikami Park Rd, Delray Beach. Included with museum admission. The authentic Japanese tea ceremony at the Seigan-tei Tea House is one of the quietest, most restorative rituals you can experience in South Florida. Seating is limited, so arrive early and let the rest of the week melt away.

Jive Talkin' - A Bee Gees Tribute - Boca Black Box
Showtime at Boca Black Box, 8221 Glades Rd, Boca Raton. Tickets through Boca Black Box. A Sunday evening of disco-era favorites, a playful and fun way to close out the weekend with friends.

"42nd Street" - Final Performance
2:00 PM matinee at the Delray Beach Playhouse. The final curtain for this beloved summer musical, a perfect Sunday-afternoon outing.

What's on for the week of September 15 through 20?

The week ahead is packed with reasons to get out: Hispanic Heritage Month begins with a county full of free events, the sunset lights up a Japanese garden, a brand-new sixties musical opens under the footlights, and Boca hosts a rivalry on the gridiron. There is something for every kind of evening.

Tuesday, September 15

Hispanic Heritage Month Begins

6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at South County Regional Park, 20405 Amphitheater Cir, Boca Raton. Free admission, weather permitting. Wednesday, September 16

A perfect midweek evening for something low-key. Consider dinner at one of the 100-plus Palm Beach County restaurants participating in Flavor South Florida, the region's month long prix fixe dining celebration running through September 30. Menus are specially priced, many starting around $25, for lunch, brunch, and dinner, making it the easiest and tastiest way to explore new places. In Delray, Downtown Delray Beach Restaurant Month adds its own roster of more than 50 restaurants with prix fixed menus and happy hour specials all September long. Then take a sunset stroll along the Delray Beach Beachfront Promenade, where parking is easy on September weekdays and the ocean view never gets old.

Thursday, September 17

Why does Palm Beach County work so well for empty nesters and retirees?

The question I hear most from people considering a move to South Florida is the one I asked myself years ago: "Will I find my community here?" The calendar answers it more honestly than any sales pitch ever could.

In just these two weeks you can cheer a country superstar at the amphitheater, watch lanterns glow over a Japanese garden while drums echo across the water, catch local college football at the FAU-FIU game, discover a new favorite restaurant through Flavor South Florida's prix fixe menus at more than 100 restaurants, and wander farmers markets with 85-plus vendors on a Saturday and Sunday morning. That is not an unusual stretch of calendar. It is an ordinary two weeks in Palm Beach County.

These are not tourist attractions. They are the fabric of a community built around connection, culture, and quality of life. For empty nesters making the decision to downsize and relocate, that fabric is everything. When you choose a home in South Florida, you are choosing a place where it is genuinely easy to stay active, stay curious, and stay surrounded by people who share your enthusiasm for this chapter of life.

On the practical side, Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000, and the Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3 percent once you establish residency. Homeowners aged 65 and older with qualifying household incomes may be eligible for additional exemptions. Healthcare is excellent, with Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center all providing nationally recognized care close to home.

More than two dozen 55-plus communities across the county offer active, amenity-rich lifestyles with clubhouses, pools, fitness centers, pickleball courts, and social calendars of their own. And with the Brightline station in Boca Raton, getting to Miami or Orlando by rail is effortless. Pair all of that with a calendar like this one, and it is easy to see why so many empty nesters choose to make this move their next chapter.
