October is Palm Beach County at its best: the summer heat finally breaks, the evenings turn golden and breezy, and the community calendar fills with the kind of events that make this place feel like a small town with a big-city culture. Over these next two weeks you can catch country superstars Dan + Shay under the stars at the amphitheater, raise a stein at the final weekend of the 52nd annual Oktoberfest of The Palm Beaches, watch the FAU Owls battle on the road and then host Homecoming in Boca Raton, and watch downtown Delray begin its joyful march toward Halloween. Whether you have lived here for years or you are quietly imagining what a move could look like, here is exactly what is coming up in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and across Palm Beach County from October 12 through October 25.
What's happening this week, October 12 through 18?
This week belongs to the music lovers and the merrymakers. A holiday Monday eases the week in, the amphitheater hosts one of the biggest country tours of the season on Saturday, and the final weekend of the county's favorite Oktoberfest wraps in Lake Worth Beach. Along the way, a waterfront festival takes over the Riverwalk in Jupiter, a playful pickle festival opens at a county park, and the greenmarkets roll in full fall swing.
Monday, October 12
Columbus Day & Indigenous Peoples' Day, a holiday Monday
It is a federal holiday, which means banks and many offices are closed and the county takes a breath. It is also the kind of unhurried day South Florida does so well: the beaches are a little quieter than a summer Monday, and it is a perfect time for a long walk on the sand at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton or a lazy afternoon strolling the gardens at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. Consider it a gentle start to a full two weeks.

Why does Palm Beach County work so well for empty nesters and retirees?
The question I hear most often from people considering a move to South Florida is a simple one: "Will I find my community here?" And the calendar answers it more honestly than any sales pitch ever could.
Consider everything in just these two weeks. You could see a Grammy-winning country duo under the stars in West Palm Beach on Saturday night, raise a stein at the 52nd annual Oktoberfest of The Palm Beaches over the weekend, and take in a waterfront festival on the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter. The following week, you could watch hundreds of costumed neighbors ride through downtown Delray for charity, cheer the Owls to Homecoming victory, and browse a farmers market with more than 85 vendors on Sunday morning. That is not an unusual stretch. It is a perfectly ordinary two weeks in Palm Beach County in October.
These are not tourist attractions. They are the fabric of a community built around connection, culture, and quality of life. For empty nesters making the decision to downsize and relocate, that fabric is everything. When you choose a home in South Florida, you are not just picking a floor plan or a zip code. You are choosing a place where it is genuinely easy to stay active, stay curious, and stay surrounded by people who share your enthusiasm for this chapter of life.
On the practical side, Palm Beach County continues to offer compelling advantages for retirees. Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000. The Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3 percent once you establish residency. Homeowners aged 65 and older with qualifying household incomes may be eligible for additional exemptions. Healthcare is excellent, with Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center all providing nationally recognized care close to home.
More than two dozen 55-plus communities across the county offer active, amenity-rich lifestyles with clubhouses, pools, fitness centers, pickleball courts, and social calendars of their own. And with the Brightline station in Boca Raton providing rail access to Miami and Orlando, getting anywhere you want to go is effortless.

I know because I made the move myself, from Ohio to South Florida, carrying all the same questions and uncertainties you might be holding right now. And I have spent the last 25-plus years helping families make the same transition.
The decision to downsize and relocate is one of the biggest life changes you will ever make. But it is also one of the most rewarding. The freedom, the community, the cultural richness, the daily access to beauty and connection, all of it is real, and all of it is waiting for you here.
