Here we are in the heart of August, and every time I check the community calendar for Palm Beach County, I am amazed at how much is still happening. The summer is far from quiet here. If anything, August might be the best month to be a local in South Florida. The seasonal crowds have thinned, restaurant reservations are easy to come by, and the county's cultural calendar is packed with the kind of events that make you feel like you belong to something real. From the traditional Japanese Obon Weekend at Morikami to free waterfront concerts under the stars, here is everything you need to know about what's happening across Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Palm Beach County from August 6 through August 20.

What's happening on Thursday, August 6?

Clematis by Night: The Naughty Iguanas — West Palm Beach Waterfront
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the Great Lawn at 101 N Clematis St. Free admission. This week's concert features The Naughty Iguanas, a high-energy cover band that plays everything from 90s rock to current hits. Food trucks arrive at 5:30 PM. You can bring your own blanket or lawn chair, or just walk the promenade and listen from the path. This is one of the longest-running free concert series in Florida, and nights like tonight are why. The combination of live music, the breeze off the Intracoastal, and a crowd of neighbors catching up after work is hard to beat.

Piano and Poetry at St. Gregory's — Boca Raton
6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church (100 NE Mizner Blvd). An intimate evening with pianist Tim Brumfield performing on a Steinway grand, paired with classic poetry readings. Free admission, with reservations recommended. This is the kind of cultural event that quietly makes Boca Raton special.

What about Friday, August 7?

6th Annual Battle of the Bands — Mizner Park Amphitheater, Boca Raton
7:00 PM to 10:30 PM at 590 Plaza Real. Free admission. Eight bands compete in two divisions for a $2,500 grand prize, with a Pop-Up Youth Market running from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM showcasing young entrepreneurs ages 13 to 20. This is the final event of the City of Boca Raton's Summer in the City series, and it always draws an enthusiastic crowd. Bring a blanket, bring a friend, and get there early for a good spot on the lawn.

First Friday Art Walk — Delray Beach
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM throughout the Pineapple Grove Arts District. Free self-guided tour of galleries, studios, and cultural venues. Arts Warehouse (313 NE 3rd St) opens a new exhibition and hosts open studios as part of the evening. Park once on Atlantic Avenue and spend hours exploring. It is the best free cultural event in South Florida, and it never gets old.

What's on for Saturday, August 8?

Summer in the City Final Concert — Mizner Park Amphitheater, Boca Raton
8:00 PM. Wait, did I just mention the Battle of Bands was the final Summer in the City event? It was. Tonight the city's free concert series wraps up with a tribute band performance. Chair rentals available for $5, or bring your own.

Sketching in the Galleries — Boca Raton Museum of Art
10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at 501 Plaza Real, Mizner Park. A relaxed guided sketching session inside the museum galleries. All materials provided, no experience needed. Included with regular admission ($14 to $18).

Bird-Watching & Heritage Gardens — Delray Beach Historical Society
10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at 3 NE First St, Delray Beach. Free admission. A quiet morning exploring the native gardens and spotting local bird species.

What about Sunday, August 9?

Boca Farmers Market
9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus (4950 Communication Ave). Over 80 local vendors selling fresh produce, artisan breads, local honey, organic meats, and handcrafted goods. Free admission. Summer is the best time to visit — smaller crowds and more time for conversations with the farmers.

The Good Day Market
9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Lake Biwa Pavilion (16801 S Jog Rd, West Delray). Alternating Sundays between West Delray and Boynton Beach. Local produce, artisan vendors, and live music. Dog friendly, free admission.

What events are happening the week of August 10 through 16?

Monday, August 10

Matinee for Moms — Boca Chamber Festival Days
2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Movies of Delray (7421 W Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach). Part of the annual Boca Chamber Festival Days series of 23 philanthropic events running throughout August. Fundraiser for CityHouse. Movie screening, popcorn, and a drink for $20.

Tuesday, August 11

"100 Years of Surfing in Delray Beach & Beyond" Lecture
6:00 PM at the Delray Beach Historical Society (3 NE First St). A fascinating talk featuring a surfing Hall of Famer and the Executive Director of the Surfing Florida Museum. Free admission. Did you know Delray Beach has a surfing heritage stretching back nearly a century? I didn't either until I moved here. It is a wonderful slice of local history.

Wednesday, August 12 through Sunday, August 16

Tony Robbins — Business Mastery — Palm Beach County Convention Center
A five-day immersive event for entrepreneurs and business leaders. While this one is geared toward professionals, it speaks to the incredible energy and economic vitality of Palm Beach County. Events like this bring thousands of visitors to West Palm Beach throughout the year.

Thursday, August 13

Clematis by Night — West Palm Beach Waterfront

Yoga at the Museum — Boca Raton Museum of Art
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at 501 Plaza Real, Mizner Park. Guided yoga in the museum galleries surrounded by art. Mats provided. Tickets typically $20 to $25 for non-members. A beautiful way to start the weekend.

Candlelight: Tribute to Bad Bunny — St. Gregory's Episcopal Church, Boca Raton
8:30 PM at 100 NE Mizner Blvd. A live candlelit string quartet performance. Tickets from approximately $110. These Candlelight concerts have become wildly popular for good reason.

Saturday & Sunday, August 15-16

Obon Weekend at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens — Delray Beach
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM both days at 4000 Morikami Park Rd. This traditional Japanese festival honoring ancestral spirits is one of the most beautiful cultural events in all of South Florida. Highlights include Taiko drumming performances by Fushu Daiko (11:30 AM, 12:30 PM, and 2:30 PM both days, tickets $5 for members and $10 for non-members plus museum admission), traditional Bon dancing workshops, Memory Slips (Tanzaku) to honor loved ones, a Bon altar, and a Family Fun Day with Lantern Craft on Saturday from 11 AM to 4 PM. Museum admission is $16 for adults, $10 for children ages 6 to 17, and free for members. On Sunday evening, the Obon Launch the Lantern Dinner offers a gourmet sit-down dinner paired with whiskey and sake tastings, plus the chance to float lanterns.

I cannot recommend Obon Weekend highly enough. The Morikami's 16 acres of Japanese gardens are always worth the trip, but during Obon the entire museum takes on a contemplative, reverent energy that is rare and special. For empty nesters who love culture, nature, and meaningful experiences, this is the highlight of the summer.

Boca Farmers Market
Every Sunday, including August 16, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus.

The Good Day Market
Alternating Sundays. Check their social media for the August 16 location.

What about the week of August 17 through 20?

Tuesday, August 18

Florida Primary Election Day
7:00 AM to 7:00 PM across Palm Beach County. Your voice matters at every level of government. Check palmbeachcounty.gov for your polling location and sample ballot. I always remind my clients that one of the best parts of becoming a Florida resident is having a real say in the issues that shape our community.

Jack Johnson: Surfilmusic Tour 2026 — iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre, West Palm Beach
7:30 PM at 601-7 Sansburys Way. Jack Johnson's laid-back, acoustic surf-rock is the perfect summer concert experience. Tickets available through Ticketmaster. A wonderful evening for anyone who loves easygoing live music outdoors.

Thursday, August 20

Clematis by Night — West Palm Beach Waterfront
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Free concert featuring CoverUp (80s Rock and Punk). Finish the work week with some nostalgia on the Great Lawn. Food trucks from 5:30 PM.

Rob Zombie & Marilyn Manson — iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre, West Palm Beach
6:30 PM. For anyone who likes things a little heavier, this co-headlining tour brings industrial metal to the amphitheatre. Presented with The Hu and Orgy.

South Florida GIS Expo — Palm Beach County Convention Center
August 20-21. A free annual conference. An interesting peek into how technology shapes our county's infrastructure and planning.

What weekly events should you put on your calendar?

Beyond the special events above, these weekly staples keep Palm Beach County's social calendar full through every season:

  • Boca Farmers Market — Every Sunday, 9 AM to 1 PM at BRiC (4950 Communication Ave). Over 80 vendors. Year-round, rain or shine.
  • Clematis by Night — Every Thursday, 6 PM to 9 PM on the West Palm Beach Waterfront. Free live music and food trucks. One of the best free entertainment options in the county.
  • The Good Day Market — Alternating Sundays, 9 AM to 2 PM, rotating between West Delray and Boynton Beach. Dog friendly.

Why is Palm Beach County such a great place for empty nesters and retirees?

I have been helping people relocate to South Florida for more than 25 years. And one thing I have learned is that the community calendar says more about a place than any statistic can. When I look at the events happening in Palm Beach County over these two weeks, I see a community that values connection, culture, and quality of life.

Consider this: a Thursday evening free concert on the West Palm Beach waterfront. A traditional Japanese festival honoring ancestors at one of the finest Japanese gardens in North America. A lecture on surfing history in a city that has been catching waves for 100 years. A farmers market where the same vendors recognize you week after week. These are not tourist attractions. They are the fabric of daily life here.

For empty nesters thinking about making a move, that fabric matters. You are not just choosing a house or a climate. You are choosing a community where you can build meaningful connections from day one. Palm Beach County makes that easy in a way few places do.

And on the practical side, the advantages for retirees are significant. Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000, and the Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3%. With world-class healthcare facilities like Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center within reach of most communities, you have access to exceptional care without traveling far. More than two dozen 55-plus communities, from Valencia Lakes to Boca West to Century Village, offer active, amenity-rich lifestyles at a range of price points.

The cost of living runs about 17% above the national average, but for most downsizers coming from states like New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut, the net result is more financial freedom, not less.
