Summer in South Florida is often misunderstood. Visitors see July and August and picture nothing but heat and humidity. But those of us who live here year-round know the truth: summer is when Palm Beach County truly shines. The snowbirds have gone home, the roads are quiet, restaurants are easy to book, and the community calendar is as full as ever. From free outdoor concerts at sunset to traditional Japanese festivals, our August calendar offers something for every kind of empty nester. Here is my roundup of the best events happening across Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Palm Beach County from August 3 through August 16.
What's happening the week of August 3 through 9?
Thursday, August 6
Piano and Poetry at St. Gregory's — Boca Raton
6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church (100 NE Mizner Blvd). An intimate evening featuring pianist Tim Brumfield performing on a Steinway grand piano, paired with poetry readings spanning Frost, Shakespeare, Angelou, and others. Admission is free. This is exactly the kind of cultural offering that makes Boca Raton feel like a small town with big-city sophistication. Reservations are recommended as space is limited.
Clematis by Night — West Palm Beach Waterfront
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the Great Lawn at 101 N Clematis St. This week's free concert features The Naughty Iguanas, a high-energy 90s rock cover band that always fills the lawn. Food trucks arrive at 5:30 PM. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and watch the sunset over the Intracoastal. It is one of the longest-running free concert series in the state, and for good reason: the combination of live music, waterfront breezes, and a welcoming crowd of neighbors makes it a perfect Thursday evening ritual.
Friday, August 7
6th Annual Battle of the Bands — Mizner Park Amphitheater, Boca Raton
7:00 PM to 10:30 PM at 590 Plaza Real. Free admission. Eight local bands split into two divisions — "under 20" and "over 20" — compete for a $2,500 grand prize. The evening also features a Pop-Up Youth Market showcasing student entrepreneurs. I have been to this event in years past, and the energy is absolutely infectious. It is one of those nights that reminds you how much creative talent lives right here in our community. Bring a blanket or a low-back chair and arrive early for a good spot on the lawn.
New Exhibition Openings at Arts Warehouse — Delray Beach
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at 313 NE 3rd St. Arts Warehouse opens new exhibitions as part of the First Friday Art Walk in Delray Beach. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet local artists, explore studio spaces, and see what's new in one of South Florida's most creative districts. Free and open to the public.
Saturday, August 8
Summer in the City Final Concert — Mizner Park Amphitheater, Boca Raton
8:00 PM. The city's free summer concert series wraps up with a tribute band performance. Past seasons have included tributes to Billy Joel, the Eagles, and Bob Marley. This is the last chance to catch the series before the fall schedule begins. Chair rentals are available for $5, or bring your own.
Sketching in the Galleries — Boca Raton Museum of Art
10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at 501 Plaza Real, Mizner Park. A relaxed, guided sketching session inside the museum galleries. No art experience needed, and all materials are provided. The cost is included with regular museum admission ($14 to $18). The first Sunday of each month is free for everyone, and this Saturday is your last chance before the free Sunday on August 9.
Delray Beach Historical Society — Bird-Watching & Heritage Gardens
10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at 3 NE First St, Delray Beach. A relaxed bird-focused day at the Historical Society's Bungalow & Heritage Gardens. Free admission. It is a quiet, thoughtful way to spend a Saturday morning learning about local bird species and the history of Delray Beach.
Sunday, August 9
Boca Farmers Market
9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus (4950 Communication Ave). With over 75 local vendors offering fresh produce, artisan foods, organic meats, local honey, and handcrafted goods, this is my go-to Sunday morning ritual. Summer is a wonderful time to visit: the crowds are smaller, and vendors have more time to talk about where your food comes from. Free admission.
The Good Day Market — West Delray / Boynton Beach
9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Lake Biwa Pavilion (16801 S Jog Rd, West Delray). This market alternates Sundays between West Delray and Boynton Beach. Family-friendly and dog-friendly, it features local produce, artisan vendors, and live music. Free admission.
What about the week of August 10 through 16?
Monday, August 10
Matinee for Moms — Boca Chamber Festival Days
2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Movies of Delray (7421 W Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach). Part of the annual Boca Chamber Festival Days, a series of 23 philanthropic events running throughout August. This fundraiser for CityHouse includes a movie screening, popcorn, and a drink for $20. A simple, feel-good way to spend a Monday afternoon while supporting a great local cause.
Tuesday, August 11
Summer at Sea Lecture: "100 Years of Surfing in Delray Beach & Beyond"
6:00 PM at the Delray Beach Historical Society (3 NE First St). This lecture features a surfing Hall of Famer and the Executive Director of the Surfing Florida Museum, exploring the rich history of surfing along our coastline. Delray Beach has a deep surfing heritage that dates back nearly a century, and this talk is a fascinating window into a piece of local culture many residents don't know about. Free admission.
Friday, August 14
Candlelight: Tribute to Bad Bunny — St. Gregory's Episcopal Church, Boca Raton
8:30 PM at 100 NE Mizner Blvd. A live, candlelit string quartet performance celebrating the music of Bad Bunny. Tickets from approximately $110. This concert is part of a popular Candlelight series that has been selling out in cities across the country. The combination of classical instrumentation and contemporary Latin pop creates a completely unique concert experience.
Yoga at the Museum — Boca Raton Museum of Art
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at 501 Plaza Real, Mizner Park. Start the weekend with yoga in the museum galleries, surrounded by art. The evening includes a guided yoga session followed by time to explore the exhibitions. Mats are provided. Tickets are typically $20 to $25 for non-members. A beautiful way to unwind after the week.
Saturday & Sunday, August 15–16
Obon Weekend at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens — Delray Beach
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM both days at 4000 Morikami Park Rd. This traditional Japanese festival honoring ancestral spirits is one of the most beautiful and moving cultural events in South Florida. The weekend features Taiko drumming performances, traditional Bon dancing, lantern activities, artisan food vendors, and memory slips for honoring lost loved ones. Admission is $16 for adults, $10 for children ages 6 to 17, and free for members. The Morikami's 16 acres of Japanese gardens are worth the trip on their own, but Obon Weekend adds a layer of cultural richness that makes it a truly special experience. I especially recommend coming early in the morning before the heat sets in and spending a few quiet hours walking the gardens before the festival activities pick up.
Boca Farmers Market
Every Sunday, including August 16, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus.
The Good Day Market
Alternating Sundays — check their social media for the August 16 location.

Why is Palm Beach County such a great place for empty nesters and retirees?
I have spent more than 25 years helping families relocate to South Florida, and I can tell you without hesitation: Palm Beach County is one of the best places in the country for empty nesters to begin a new chapter. The summer events calendar is a direct reflection of what makes this community so special.
What stands out to me is how many of these events are free. The Battle of the Bands, Clematis by Night, the Summer in the City concert series, the Delray Beach Historical Society lectures, the farmers markets — these are not tourist attractions priced for visitors. They are community gatherings built by and for the people who live here year-round. That says something important about a place: it means the community values connection over commerce, and that your quality of life does not depend on how much you spend on entertainment.
For empty nesters who are leaving behind decades of community connections up north, finding a place where it is easy to build new ones is everything. And that is exactly what these events provide. The market vendor who remembers your name. The neighbor you meet on the lawn at a concert. The art gallery owner who invites you to the opening. These small moments add up to something bigger: a sense of belonging that you cannot buy.
And on the practical side, the advantages of Palm Beach County for retirees are significant. Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000, and the Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3%. Healthcare is excellent, with world-class facilities like Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center within a short drive of most communities. And the cost of living, while about 17% above the national average, often works out favorably for downsizers coming from high-tax states like New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.
With more than 40 public parks in Boca Raton alone, over 100 restaurants along Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, more than two dozen 55-plus communities spread across the county, and a cultural calendar that stays vibrant through every season, Palm Beach County offers a version of the good life for every kind of empty nester.
