There is a moment at the end of every August in South Florida that I have come to recognize as the sweet spot of the year. The summer crowds are thinning, the ocean is at its warmest, and the calendar is full of events that feel designed for the people who actually live here. Over the next two weeks, from the final stretch of August through Labor Day weekend, Palm Beach County delivers an extraordinary mix of live music, art walks, cultural festivals, culinary celebrations, and quiet golden-hour evenings that remind you why this stretch of Florida coast is such a special place to call home. Whether you are a longtime resident or just starting to picture what life could look like here, here is everything coming up.
What's happening this week, August 25 through 30?
Tuesday, August 25
"100 Years of Surfing" Lecture by Tom Warnke — Delray Beach Historical Society
6:00 PM at 3 NE First St, Delray Beach. $10 nonmembers, $5 members. This is the kind of evening that makes Delray Beach feel like a small town with a big story. Tom Warnke, a local historian and storyteller, presents a lecture tracing the history of surfing in Palm Beach County from the early 20th century to the present day. The Delray Beach Historical Society is housed in a charming historic building just off Atlantic Avenue, and these lectures always draw a wonderful mix of longtime locals and newer residents. If you have ever watched the waves roll in at Delray Municipal Beach and wondered about the history beneath the surface, this is your evening.
Wednesday, August 26
"The 14th Colony" Exhibition — The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum
Open 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at 71 N Federal Highway, Boca Raton. $12 adults, $8 students/seniors. Presented by the Boca Raton Historical Society, this exhibition explores Boca Raton's lesser-known connection to colonial history. The Schmidt Museum itself is one of Boca Raton's most beautiful landmarks, a 1927 Mediterranean Revival home with original hardwood floors, a grand staircase, and period furnishings. The building alone is worth the visit, and the rotating exhibitions from the Historical Society always add a rich layer of local context.

What about Labor Day weekend, August 31 through September 6?
The week after August 30 is one of my favorite stretches in Palm Beach County. The summer crowds have thinned. The seasonal residents have not yet returned. And the calendar is full of events that feel like they were designed just for the people who live here. This is the week when South Florida exhales and shows you who it really is.
Monday, August 31
Labor Day — Beaches, parks, and outdoor spaces across Palm Beach County. This is the last big holiday of summer, and South Florida does it better than almost anywhere else. Red Reef Park in Boca Raton, Spanish River Park, and the Delray Beach Beachfront Promenade are all open and at their absolute best. Pack a cooler, bring a chair, and spend the afternoon with the sound of the Atlantic as your soundtrack. Parking fills early on holiday mornings, so arrive before 10 AM if you can. This is the kind of unhurried day that reminds you why people move here in the first place.
Note: Palm Beach County Library branches are closed for Labor Day. Most restaurants and entertainment venues remain open.

Why does Palm Beach County work so well for empty nesters and retirees?
The question I hear most often from people considering a move to South Florida is straightforward: "Will I find my community here?" And the calendar answers it more eloquently than I ever could in conversation.
In less than two weeks, you could hear a lecture on the history of surfing, do yoga in a wildflower park, see a world-class Japanese woodblock print exhibition, watch a major concert at one of the top amphitheaters in the Southeast, attend a candlelit string quartet performance in a historic church, explore a world-class art museum, browse over 80 vendors at a farmers market, celebrate an inaugural mango festival in an artsy beach town, and wrap up the long weekend with Minor League Baseball under the lights. That is not an exceptional season. That is a normal late-summer stretch in Palm Beach County.
These are not tourist attractions. They are the fabric of a community built around connection, culture, and quality of life. And for empty nesters making the decision to downsize and relocate, that fabric is everything. When you choose a home in South Florida, you are not just picking a floor plan. You are choosing a lifestyle where you can be active, engaged, and surrounded by people who share your curiosity and your enthusiasm for this chapter of life.
On the practical side, Palm Beach County continues to offer compelling financial advantages for retirees. Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000. The Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3 percent once you establish residency. Homeowners aged 65 and older with qualifying household incomes may be eligible for additional exemptions. Healthcare is excellent, with Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center all providing nationally recognized care close to home.
More than two dozen 55-plus communities across the county offer active, amenity-rich lifestyles with clubhouses, pools, fitness centers, pickleball courts, and social calendars of their own. And with the Brightline station in Boca Raton providing rail access to Miami and Orlando, getting anywhere you want to go is effortless.

Thinking about making Palm Beach County your home?
If reading through this list stirs something in you, whether it is excitement, curiosity, or the quiet sense that this is the kind of life you have been waiting for, I want you to know that it is closer than you think. I know because I made the move myself, from Ohio to South Florida, carrying all the same questions and uncertainties you might be holding right now. And I have spent the last 25-plus years helping hundreds of families make the same transition.
The decision to downsize and relocate is one of the biggest life changes you will ever make. But it is also one of the most rewarding. The freedom, the community, the cultural richness, the daily access to beauty and connection, all of it is real and all of it is waiting for you here.
Whether you are just beginning to explore the idea of downsizing, you want to tour 55-plus communities in Boca Raton or Delray Beach, or you simply want someone who understands the process to walk you through the financial side of the decision, I am here for that conversation. No pressure. No sales pitch. Just honest, experienced guidance from someone who has walked this path more times than I can count.
Let's talk about your next chapter.
Book a free, no-pressure Downsizing Strategy Session and let's talk about what your South Florida lifestyle could look like. I will help you understand the communities, the costs, and the process without any pressure.
