What's Happening in Palm Beach County: August 13-26

There is something about mid-August in South Florida that always catches me by surprise. The summer heat is still here, sure, but the energy shifts. People seem to linger a little longer over their iced coffee. The evening concerts feel more relaxed. And the calendar, as always, is packed with reasons to get out and explore. This week and next, Palm Beach County is offering everything from a traditional Japanese Obon festival to Broadway-caliber theater, flamenco guitar under the stars, and a wellness party that sounds like the perfect excuse to gather some girlfriends and make it a night. Whether you are a longtime local or just starting to explore what life here could look like, this is your two-week guide to what matters.

What's happening this week, August 13 through 19?

Thursday, August 13

Clematis by Night — West Palm Beach Waterfront
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the Great Lawn at 101 N Clematis St. Free admission. Concert lineup to be announced on the City of West Palm Beach website; food trucks arrive at 5:30 PM. This is the longest-running free concert series in Florida, and I have been sending new residents here for years. It is the single best way to meet people, feel the pulse of downtown West Palm Beach, and watch the sun set over the Intracoastal. Bring a folding chair and a light jacket for after the sun goes down.

Wellington Food Truck & Music Series — Wellington Amphitheater
Food trucks from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, music at 6:30 PM at 12100 Forest Hill Blvd. Free admission. Over 20 food trucks rotate each week. This Thursday's concert lineup will be posted on the Village of Wellington's website. Bring the grandkids or come solo; the lawn seating and family-friendly atmosphere make it an easy, no-stress evening out.

Summer Film Series: Frida Kahlo — Boca Raton Museum of Art
Time to be confirmed at 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. Included with regular museum admission ($12 for adults, $10 for seniors, free for members and children under 12). The Boca Museum's summer film series is a hidden gem, and a film about one of art history's most iconic figures is the perfect way to spend a Thursday evening in air-conditioned comfort.

Friday, August 14 through Sunday, August 16

Obon Weekend — Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Delray Beach
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily at 4000 Morikami Park Rd, Delray Beach. Regular admission ($17 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for children 4-17). This is one of the most beautiful and meaningful cultural events in South Florida, and I look forward to it every year. Obon is a Japanese Buddhist tradition honoring ancestors, celebrated with folk dancing (Bon Odori), taiko drum performances, traditional food, and the lighting of floating lanterns. The Morikami's 200 acres of authentic Japanese gardens provide an exquisite setting. The Bon Odori dance sessions are open to all, and watching the sun set over the gardens during this festival is genuinely moving. This is a three-day event, so if Friday does not work, Saturday or Sunday will be just as special.

Friday, August 14

Magic In Mizner — The Studio at Mizner Park, Boca Raton
7:00 PM at 201 W Palmetto Park Rd, Boca Raton. Tickets typically $25 to $35. Magic Jack Maxwell brings his intimate close-up magic performance to The Studio in Mizner Park. This is the August edition of what has become a popular recurring series. A night of magic in one of Boca Raton's most elegant settings makes for a unique date night or evening out with friends.

Art After Dark — Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach
5:00 PM to 10:00 PM at 1450 S Dixie Hwy. $18 for adults, free for members and children under 18. Live music, pop-up talks, gallery experiences, and a cash bar. The Norton's Friday night tradition is one of the most sophisticated ways to spend an evening in Palm Beach County. This weekend is also your last chance to see 60 Seconds: Polaroids from the Collection, closing August 16.

Saturday, August 15

Free Summer Saturday — Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Free admission all day. Every Saturday through the summer, the Norton opens its doors at no charge. This Saturday, make a point to see 60 Seconds: Polaroids from the Collection before it closes on Sunday.

Night for the Natural Areas — Tequesta Smokehouse & Lounge, Tequesta
An evening celebrating Palm Beach County's natural preserves and outdoor spaces. Check local event listings for exact time and pricing. This is a wonderful reminder that Palm Beach County offers more than beaches and golf courses, our natural areas and waterways are extraordinary and worth exploring.

Sunday, August 16

Boca Farmers Market
9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus (4950 Communication Ave). Over 80 vendors selling fresh produce, artisan breads, local honey, and handcrafted goods. Free admission. This is the final day of Obon Weekend at Morikami too, so you could make a Sunday of it: start at the farmers market, then head to the Japanese gardens for the final round of taiko drumming and Bon Odori dancing.

The Good Day Market
9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Alternating Sundays between West Delray and Boynton Beach. Check their social media for this week's location. Local produce, artisan vendors, live music, and a dog-friendly atmosphere.

Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18

Use these quieter early-week days to check out the ongoing exhibitions at the Norton Museum or the Boca Raton Museum of Art, take a morning yoga class at one of the many studios across Boca and Delray, or simply enjoy a long lunch at an outdoor cafe in Mizner Park. I have found that the slower pace of Monday and Tuesday in August is exactly what makes this season special, you can get a reservation anywhere, the beaches are uncrowded, and the staff at your favorite restaurant actually has time to chat.

Wednesday, August 19

Women's Wellness Party — Delray Beach
Check local event listings for venue and time. An evening focused on wellness, connection, and self-care for women. Events like this reflect the incredible community networks that make Palm Beach County such a welcoming place for empty nesters and retirees looking to build new connections. I have seen so many women find their people at gatherings like this.

What about next week, August 20 through 26?

Thursday, August 20

Clematis by Night — West Palm Beach Waterfront
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Free concert on the Great Lawn. Concert lineup to be confirmed on the City of West Palm Beach website. Food trucks from 5:30 PM.

Wellington Food Truck & Music Series — Wellington Amphitheater
Food trucks from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, music at 6:30 PM. Free admission. Another Thursday, another great evening in Wellington.

Friday, August 21

Art After Dark — Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach
5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. $18 general admission, free for members and children under 18. Another Friday night with extended hours, live music, and special programming at the Norton. New exhibitions are always on view, and the atmosphere is reliably wonderful.

"42nd Street" — Delray Beach Playhouse
7:30 PM at 950 NW 9th St, Delray Beach. Tickets typically $40 to $55. The classic Broadway musical about a chorus girl who gets her big break opens this weekend at the historic Delray Beach Playhouse. This is community theater at its finest, and the Playhouse has been a cornerstone of Delray's cultural scene for decades. I have never left a show there without a smile on my face.

Saturday, August 22

This Saturday might be the single most event-packed day of the month in Palm Beach County. Clear your calendar now.

Free Summer Saturday — Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach

Delray's Hottest Party: A Women's Wellness Celebration — Old School Square, Delray Beach
4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at 51 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach. This is described as an afternoon of empowerment, connection, and fun focused on women's wellness. Old School Square is the heart of downtown Delray Beach, and events there always have an electric, community-driven energy. Grab a group of friends or come alone and meet new people, this is exactly the kind of event where new friendships in a new town begin.

Siempre Flamenco — Arts Garage, Delray Beach
8:00 PM to 10:00 PM at 94 NE 2nd Ave, Delray Beach. Tickets typically $35 to $50. An evening of authentic flamenco music and dance in the intimate setting of Arts Garage in the Pineapple Grove Arts District. Flamenco is passionate, precise, and completely captivating. I have attended performances at Arts Garage before and the proximity to the performers creates an experience you simply cannot get at a large venue.

"42nd Street" Matinee — Delray Beach Playhouse
2:00 PM at 950 NW 9th St, Delray Beach. If Friday or Saturday evening does not work, catch the Saturday matinee of this Broadway classic.

Sunday, August 23

Why does Palm Beach County work so well for empty nesters and retirees?

I have been helping families relocate to South Florida for more than 25 years. And in all that time, I have never found a more reliable indicator of quality of life than a community's event calendar. When I look at the two weeks ahead in Palm Beach County, I see a region that understands how to make life feel rich without requiring a big budget or a long drive.

Think about what you could do in a single Saturday this month: start the morning at a farmers market with over 80 vendors under the South Florida sun. Spend the afternoon at a women's wellness celebration on the lawn of Old School Square. End the evening with authentic flamenco guitar and dance in an intimate arts district venue. That is not a special occasion. That is a regular Saturday in Delray Beach in August.

These are not tourist experiences. They are the fabric of everyday life here. And for empty nesters making the decision to relocate, that fabric matters enormously. You are not just buying a home. You are choosing a community where you can be engaged, connected, and culturally stimulated from the moment you arrive. I moved here from Ohio with my own questions and uncertainties, and I found that the community embraced me long before I had fully unpacked.

On the practical side, Palm Beach County continues to offer compelling advantages for retirees. Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000, and the Save Our Homes amendment ensures annual assessment increases are capped at 3 percent once you establish residency. Homeowners aged 65 or older with a household income under certain limits may qualify for additional exemptions. And with nationally recognized healthcare facilities like Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, you have access to outstanding medical care without traveling far from home.

More than two dozen 55-plus communities across the county offer active, amenity-rich lifestyles. And with the Brightline station in Boca Raton providing rail access to Miami and Orlando, even a longer day trip is effortless.
