Things to Do This Week in Boca Raton, Delray Beach & Palm Beach County

One of the questions I hear most from empty nesters considering a move to South Florida is this: "What's there to actually do here in the summer?" And I get it. For anyone coming from a colder climate where summer is the peak season for outdoor plans, arriving in July or August can feel like walking into a quiet room. But the truth is, Palm Beach County comes alive in the summer months in ways that surprise even longtime residents. The crowds thin out, the weather patterns settle into predictable afternoon showers followed by stunning evenings, and the cultural calendar is absolutely packed with free concerts, art walks, and community festivals. Here is my roundup of the best events happening across Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Palm Beach County from August 1 through August 9.

What's happening on Saturday, August 1?

6th Annual Unity Fest — Delray Beach
Saturday, August 1, 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Delray Beach Community Center (50 NW 1st Ave). This free community festival celebrates the diversity of Delray Beach with live music, food vendors, dance performances, and family-friendly activities. It's the kind of event that reminds me why Delray Beach consistently ranks as one of the most welcoming communities in South Florida. Free admission.

Boca Ballet Theatre — "La Bayadère"
Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the Boca Raton. This classical ballet performance is a rare treat for South Florida audiences, presented by one of the region's most respected ballet companies. Tickets typically range from $35 to $55. An elegant evening out for anyone who appreciates the arts.

Florida Wind Symphony Jazz Orchestra
Saturday, August 1, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in Boca Raton, presented by the Boca Raton Cultural Consortium. A free outdoor concert featuring classic jazz standards performed by a full big band orchestra. Bring a lawn chair and a light jacket.

The Ries Brothers at Crazy Uncle Mike's — Boca Raton
Saturday, August 1, 8:30 PM. This Florida-bred band blends rock, blues, and funk with tight harmonies and impressive musicianship. Tickets are around $30. A great option for a fun night out with friends.

What about Sunday, August 2?

The Gardens GreenMarket — Palm Beach Gardens
Sunday, August 2, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 10500 N Military Trail. This market is celebrating National Farmers Market Week with special programming and extended vendor participation. You'll find local produce, artisan breads, fresh-cut flowers, and prepared foods — plus live music. It's my favorite Sunday morning ritual when I'm up that way. The market accepts SNAP benefits, making fresh local food accessible to everyone.

Boca Farmers Market — Boca Raton
Sunday, August 2, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus (4950 Communication Ave). This is a year-round market, rain or shine, with over 40 vendors offering fresh produce, organic meats, artisan cheeses, and local crafts. The summer season is a great time to visit because the crowds are smaller and the vendors have more time to chat about their products.

Coco Market — Delray Beach
Sunday, August 2, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Old School Square (51 N Swinton Ave). A wellness-focused market with 75+ local vendors, wellness activities, and food from local chefs. Free admission.

What events are happening during the week of August 3–6?

West Palm Beach Waterfront Free Concert Series — Thursday, August 6
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the Great Lawn at the West Palm Beach Waterfront (101 N Clematis St). This week features The Naughty Iguanas, a high-energy 90s rock cover band that always draws a crowd. Food trucks will be on site starting at 5:30 PM. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the sunset over the Intracoastal. It's one of the best free entertainment options in Palm Beach County, and it's a wonderful way to spend a Thursday evening.

Looking for a midweek activity closer to home? The Boca Raton Museum of Art (501 Plaza Real, Mizner Park) is open Tuesday through Sunday, with the permanent collection and rotating exhibitions available for $14 to $18. The first Sunday of each month is free for everyone. And the museum's Sketching in the Galleries program on Saturday, August 8 (10:00 AM to 11:30 AM) is a lovely way to spend a quiet morning — no art experience needed, and all materials are provided.

What's on for Friday, August 7?

First Friday Art Walk — Delray Beach
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM throughout the Pineapple Grove Arts District and downtown Delray Beach. This monthly event is one of the highlights of the South Florida cultural calendar. Galleries, studios, and cultural venues open their doors for free, with many featuring new exhibitions, wine receptions, and live music. The Arts Warehouse (313 NE 3rd St) will host a new exhibition opening and open studios as part of the evening. Plan to arrive early and have dinner at one of the many restaurants along Atlantic Avenue before exploring the galleries. Parking is available in the city garage at 180 NE 1st St.

6th Annual Battle of the Bands — Boca Raton
7:00 PM to 10:30 PM at Mizner Park Amphitheater (590 Plaza Real). Free admission. This is one of my favorite events of the summer. Local bands compete for a $2,500 grand prize, and the energy on the lawn is infectious. The evening also includes a Pop-Up Youth Market featuring student entrepreneurs. Doors open at 7:00 PM, music starts at 8:00 PM. Bring a blanket or low-back chair.

What about Saturday, August 8?

2nd Annual Creative Arts and Culture Fest — Delray Beach
At the Creative Arts School at Old School Square in downtown Delray Beach. This family-friendly festival features hands-on art activities including watercolor painting and other creative workshops, dance performances from the Delray Divas Step Team and the Diamonds and Pearls Dance Team, a reading circle with the Delray Beach Children's Garden, a free comedy show, and complimentary ice cream from the Delray Beach Police Department's ice cream truck. It's a wonderful way to experience the creative energy of Delray Beach.

Summer in the City Free Concert Series — Final Show, Boca Raton
8:00 PM at Mizner Park Amphitheater. The city's free summer concert series wraps up with a tribute band performance. Past lineups have included tributes to Billy Joel, the Eagles, and Bob Marley, so expect a high-energy show that draws a big crowd. It's the last chance to catch this series before the fall season begins.

Summer Sunset Concert Series — Delray Beach
Time TBD at Old School Square Amphitheatre. Free live music with local food vendors and dancing under the stars. The full lineup for August 8 was not yet released at press time, but the series runs through the end of summer. Check oldschoolsquare.org for updates.

What about Sunday, August 9?

The Gardens GreenMarket runs every Sunday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and the Boca Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Both markets are reliable anchor points for a relaxing Sunday morning. Pick up fresh produce for the week, grab a coffee and a pastry from a local vendor, and take a slow walk through the market. It's the kind of simple, high-quality weekend routine that makes South Florida living so special.

Why is Palm Beach County such a great place for empty nesters and retirees?

I've been helping people relocate to South Florida for more than 25 years, and I can tell you without hesitation that Palm Beach County is one of the best places in the country for empty nesters looking to start a new chapter. The reasons go beyond the beaches and the weather, though those are certainly part of the picture.

What I hear from my clients again and again is that Palm Beach County offers something they didn't expect: a genuine sense of belonging. The summer events calendar is a direct reflection of that. These aren't tourist attractions designed for visitors — they are community events built by and for the people who live here year-round. The Unity Fest, the Art Walk, the farmers markets, the free concert series — these are the places where neighbors become friends, where newcomers are welcomed, and where the rhythm of daily life slows down to something more human.

That's the part of South Florida living that doesn't show up in a brochure. It's the market vendor who remembers your name, the art gallery owner who invites you to the opening reception, the neighbors you meet at the concert on the lawn. For empty nesters who are leaving behind a lifetime of community connections up north, finding a place where it's easy to build new ones is everything.

And of course, the practical advantages are significant. Florida has no state income tax, no Social Security tax, and one of the most favorable property tax systems in the country for seniors. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000, and the Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3%. Healthcare is excellent, with world-class facilities like Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center within a short drive of most communities. And the cost of living, while about 17% above the national average, is often a net positive for downsizers coming from high-tax states like New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.

With over 40 parks in Boca Raton alone, 100+ restaurants on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, and more than two dozen 55+ communities spread across the county — from Valencia Lakes to Boca West to Century Village — there is a version of the good life here for every kind of empty nester.
